It was established in May 1963, by the Alabama Legislature and it is a public, medical-related university. The planning of the university started as an idea back in 1956. Between 1944 and 1960, officials from the University of Alabama refused to increase the funding for the extension center in Mobile, as well as offering the students advanced degrees.
The university grew during the past 45 years into the renowned educational institute that today is, having more than 14 000 students. Until today, the University of South Alabama has awarded more than 62,000 degrees, and it's divided in nine colleges, including: College of Medicine, College of Allied Health Professions, Mitchell College of Business, College of Engineering and College of Arts and Sciences.
